Tolstachaolais broadband pole can proceed under permitted-development rules, council says

A 10 September notice covers one fixed-line broadband pole. Roads staff want it behind the roadside ditch, and any road crossing may need separate Roads Authority approval.

Comhairle nan Eilean Siar says a proposed BT Openreach pole for fixed-line broadband at Tolstachaolais can be installed under permitted-development rules.

The council's notification, dated 10 September 2026, covers one pole on the Isle of Lewis. It says the proposal as submitted falls under Schedule 1, Part 20, Class 67 of Scotland's Town and Country Planning (General Permitted Development) Order, as amended. In this case, the council says it does not need to issue the operator a planning-authority notice of conditions for the equipment installation.

The council's Roads Section asked for the pole to be placed behind the roadside ditch. The letter adds that separate approval from the Comhairle as Roads Authority may be required for road crossings.

The notification concerns a single proposed pole; it does not establish that installation has taken place.
